What is Botox?

Before undergoing a Botox treatment, we understand that you want to know more about it. Botox is a brand name for the active ingredient Botulinum toxin. This is a protein that reduces muscle activity and has been used safely and successfully to treat facial wrinkles since the 1990s. Other brands with the active ingredient botulinum toxin are Azzalure and Bocouture. Botox was initially used against muscle spasms. After an ophthalmologist accidentally found out in the 1990s that it also helped against crow's feet, she started researching this drug further. Two years after this discovery, the first scientific research into botulinum toxin and its cosmetic application has appeared. Now 30 years later, treatment with Botulinum toxin has become very common in the Netherlands and is one of the most popular procedures in the cosmetic industry.

What does Botox do?

Since Botulinum toxin reduces muscle activity, it is ideal for reducing wrinkles caused by muscle contraction. By injecting it into the muscles in the face, the wrinkles that arise will disappear or reduce. In addition to this cosmetic application, Botox can also be used medically: migraines, teeth grinding and excessive sweating can be treated well.

Common Problems

There are several areas on the face where Botox can be successfully applied to treat wrinkles. There are a number of common areas where clients come to visit us on a daily basis. Botox is mainly used in the upper half of the face. Think of the treatment of the frown lines, crow's feet or the forehead. It is also widely used for headaches or migraines. Botox can also be injected into the chin with an overactive chin muscle.

Not only in the face

Botox is not only used in the face, by the way. Botox in the armpits works great against excessive sweating. The same goes for treating a sweaty forehead or sweaty hands. Misunderstandings exist about the use of Botox in the lips or for the treatment of puffiness. Botox is not suitable for this and fillers are used.

The Treatment

An anesthetic is not necessary for a Botox treatment.

We inject a small amount of botulinum toxin directly into the muscle in question using a very fine injection needle. p>

The botulinum toxin ensures that the signals from the nerve to the muscle are blocked, so that the muscle can no longer contract.

The total treatment takes about 15 minutes. You can go home immediately after the botox treatment.

Risks & Complications

After the botox treatment, a small blue spot may appear, which disappears after a few days.

In rare cases, a drooping eyelid may develop during the treatment of the frown lines.< /p>

This only remains for a few weeks and disappears spontaneously.

When treating the forehead, it is possible that the eyebrows sag slightly due to muscle relaxation.

All these complications are rare, which is why botulinum toxin is considered the safest and most effective wrinkle treatment available.

Botulin toxin has been administered by many doctors safely and without side effects or complications for years.

After 3 to 5 days the effect is noticeable and the wrinkles are already a lot softer. After 2 weeks the muscles are optimally relaxed and the effect of the treatment is maximum. You will get the best result if you frequently use the injected muscles shortly after the treatment.

The result is not permanent, however. The duration of the result varies from person to person and varies from 3 to 6 months. Then you can repeat the treatment. Experience shows that the more often you undergo a treatment, the longer the result lasts and the treatment frequency decreases.

There are certain questions that often come up about botox and the injectables treatments. We have listed the most frequently asked questions for you in the overview below.

1. How does a botox treatment work?

Botox is actually a muscle relaxant. By introducing this substance into the skin, wrinkles and lines can be reduced or disappeared. During a Botox treatment, fine lines and wrinkles are removed, as it were, by relaxing certain muscles. This Botulinum Toxin substance is inserted with a very thin needle in the place where you wish it. This can be, for example, a certain wrinkle or line that bothers you.

2. Am I suitable for botox treatment?

During a Botox treatment, a muscle relaxant is injected into the skin. In principle, anyone can undergo this treatment. It is always wise to discuss the possible risks of the treatment with the doctor beforehand.

3. What causes wrinkles?

Various aging processes occur as we age. Think, for example, of skin sagging and skin aging. The older we get, the more visible skin aging usually becomes. As the skin loses elasticity, wrinkles and lines can form. The degree of skin aging varies from person to person as he or she gets older. The extent to which someone suffers from skin aging depends on a number of factors. Genetic predisposition plays an important role in this. However, your lifestyle, sun exposure and stress are also factors that can influence skin aging.

4. What can I expect after the Botox treatment?

Immediately after the treatment with Botox, you usually do not see any result of the treatment. The results of the treatment are visible after about 5 days. In the beginning, the treated area may still be a little red and swollen. Many women (and nowadays also men) opt for this treatment because of the beautiful, natural and fast result.

5. What result can I expect from the Botox treatment?

Before the Botox treatment takes place, you always discuss your expectations and wishes with the doctor. During the consultation, the doctor will explain whether your expectations are correct and whether they are feasible. The doctor will also discuss with you which treatment will give the best result. In addition to Botulinum Toxin, there is also, for example, the filler treatment. Fillers can also be combined well with Botox in some cases, for an even better result.

6. Is a Botox treatment painful?

The Botox treatment is generally not considered a painful treatment. The insertion of the needle is usually the most annoying for many people. According to most clients, this can be compared to a pinprick.

7. Can I influence the final result myself?

As with all other cosmetic procedures, you also have an important share in the final result. It is important that you adhere to the before and after care. In the before and after care, for example, instructions are given about smoking and the use of alcohol. Your health also influences the recovery after the treatment and therefore also influences the final result.

8. What are the benefits of the Botox treatment?

The Botox treatment has several advantages over various other wrinkle treatments. The main advantage is that it is a relatively safe treatment with fast results.

9. What kind of Botox is used?

There are different types of muscle relaxants. However, when we talk about Botox, we always mean the substance Botulinum Toxin.

10. Can a Botox treatment be performed under full anaesthetic?

It is never chosen to do the Botox treatment under full anaesthetic.

11. How many areas can be treated with Botox?

In principle, several zones can be treated simultaneously with Botox in one treatment. You can discuss with the doctor which area you would like to have treated. You can indicate the most important wrinkles and lines that bother you. It is also possible, for example, to have various wrinkles treated and to combine this with a lip augmentation, which is done with fillers.

12. How long does a Botox treatment take?

The duration of the Botox treatment depends on a number of factors. This is partly dependent on the number of zones that are treated and the amount of ML that you want to inject. On average, the doctor usually spends about 10 to 30 minutes with the Botulinum Toxin treatment.

13. When is the Botox result optimal?

Botox starts working after 48 hours, usually it takes a week before the result becomes visible. The maximum effect is reached after 2 weeks. The cosmetic result lasts about 3-6 months.

14. Can the Botox treatment be undone?

The effect of the Botox treatment will decrease over time. The effect of the treatment is no longer visible about 6 to 12 months after the treatment. Your body will therefore automatically undo the effect.

15. What Botox costs can I count on?

The Botox costs depend on a number of factors. The costs of the treatment depend, among other things, on the number of ML required, i.e. the amount of Botox that must be injected. The more Botox is needed, the higher the cost of treatment will be. Do you want to have multiple zones treated? Then the costs are usually higher than if you only want to have 1 zone treated. It is always discussed in advance with the doctor how high the costs of the treatment will be.

16. What types of injectables are there?

There are many different types of injectables. Note that there are large differences in quality. FillerHouse only uses the best quality injectables. We use, among other things, the Stylage® brands from Vivacy. We use the Botox® brand for a treatment with the substance Botulinum Toxin.

17. Is a Botox treatment only for women or also for men?

It is striking that the number of men who opt for a Botox treatment has increased sharply in recent years. About 10 years ago there was almost no man who opted for a Botox treatment, while this percentage is now much higher. It is estimated that this is now about 10%. An important reason for this is that it is becoming more and more normal for men to do something about his appearance. In addition, the taboo on such cosmetic procedures seems to be increasingly broken.

18. Can the Botox treatment be paid in installments?

No this is not possible.

19. What is discussed during a Botox consultation?

Before someone undergoes a cosmetic procedure, it is often first chosen to come for a consultation. You can then get to know the clinic, the doctor and other people involved. During the consultation you can present your wishes and ask any questions you may have. In addition, your skin will be examined and it will be explained what results you can expect. During this introductory meeting, your health will also be discussed and an explanation will be given about how the treatment works. You can also submit your wishes and explain what you expect from the treatment. The doctor will discuss these wishes and expectations with you.

20. What kind of wrinkles is botulinum toxin used for?

Botulin toxin is mainly suitable for reducing the so-called dynamic wrinkles. These are crow's feet, forehead and frown lines. Botox is also suitable for treating wrinkles on your upper lip, nose and chin. Botox treatments are regularly used in the treatment of teeth grinding, migraine and excessive sweating.

21. Can wrinkles be prevented with botulinum toxin?

Wrinkles are a natural result of skin folding and aging. Your skin becomes less elastic with age. In combination with a reduced collagen production, wrinkles arise. By starting botulinum toxin injections in time, you prevent the development of wrinkle formation. Wrinkles that are already present can also be treated with this substance.

22. What is a botox zone?

During a botox treatment, zones are discussed. For example, one zone concerns your frown lines. Crow's feet are also a zone, just like forehead wrinkles.

23. Is a botulinum toxin treatment safe?

Botulin toxin treatments are relatively safe. Side effects are rare and occur mainly at the injection site. You can think of slight swellings and red discolorations of the skin. Only in a few cases does it happen that, for example, an eyelid temporarily droops as a result of a botox injection. It is therefore important that you inform the treating specialist about your current health condition, any medication use and existing medical conditions. Botox has been used for more than 30 years and apart from the effect on the muscles being treated, botulinum toxin has no effect on other parts of the body.

24. Is botulinum toxin bad for my body?

If you have the botox treatment performed by an experienced specialist, this will usually not cause any damage. Botulinum toxin is only toxic in exceptionally high concentrations, just like paracetamol, for example. A botulinum toxin treatment at FillerHouse is not dangerous, because the treatment is performed by (an) experienced and skilled doctor(s).

25. Does my face still have expression after a botox treatment?

Botulin toxin will not make your face expressionless if you have the treatment carried out by an expert. At FillerHouse, the emphasis of a botox treatment is always on a natural result. The experienced doctor(s) are careful and extremely accurate with the placement of the injections, so that there will be no question of an excess of botulinum toxin.

26. What is the difference between fillers and botulinum toxin?

Both botox and fillers are injectables that are used in the treatment of wrinkles. However, Botox has a different effect than a filler. Botulinum toxin stops the muscle in a certain area and is therefore suitable for, among other things, the treatment of dynamic wrinkles. Botox has a preventive effect and prevents existing wrinkles from deepening. Hyaluronan fillers, on the other hand, fill in wrinkles. Nowadays it is possible to choose one for a combination of botox and fillers.

27. Is botulinum toxin a good treatment for fuller lips?

No, it is wrongly thought that people with filled lips have undergone botox treatment. Botulinum toxin can be used to treat the wrinkles around your mouth and lips, but not to fill your lips. If you want to have your lips filled, the doctor will recommend a treatment with fillers.

28. Can I drink alcohol after a botox treatment?

Botulin toxin is absorbed into the treated area. This takes time. The use of alcohol has the effect, among other things, that your blood vessels dilate, allowing the botox to move. As a result, the likelihood of side effects increases. In the majority of cases it goes well and moving the botox to a surrounding muscle is an exceptional case. However, do you want to achieve a nice result and minimize the risk of side effects? Then wait at least 24 hours before drinking alcohol after a botulinum toxin treatment.

29. Can I use the solarium after a botox treatment?

You will be advised not to lie down immediately after the treatment. A visit to the solarium is certainly not recommended. A doctor will advise to wait at least 24 hours and it is even better to wait until both swelling and red discolorations have disappeared.
